Job Type: Full-time, schedules (Sunday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Saturday)
Starting Salary Range: $17.50 to $20.00 per hour (based on bilingual status and/or experience)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The essential functions include:

Awake Overnight Child Care Counselors are responsible for monitoring and assuring the safety of children assigned with the cottage unit through the following:

  • Maintain awake continuous supervision of the children individually and in groups at all times throughout the shift.
  • Supervise and protect children individually and in groups at all times
  • Help children acquire socially acceptable habits of behavior, appearance and develop improved personal relationships
  • Under the guidance of the teacher, cottage supervisor, or lead child care counselor, assist with all education activities in their designated program.
  •  Help each child relate to the group and to handle individual problems
  • Be involved in the social skills training of each resident
  • Use appropriate authority and discipline as necessary to set limits for behavior and help each child develop his own capacity for self-control
  • Participate as a unit team member in the development of individual child care plans directed toward return of the child to his own home or other appropriate placement
  • Display maturity, emotional security, and temperament to care for children and adolescent residents
  • Exhibit good judgment and ability to get along with other staff members
  • Be able to give residents individual understanding and affection
  • Be able to organize and participate in group discussions, conversation during meals, recreation and art and music appreciation
  • Be able to structure and assist in various daily living skills which foster independent functioning, including but not limited to grooming, shopping, cooking, etc.
  • Be able to organize, facilitate and participate in various leisure time activities through cultivation of personal interests and join with the children and adolescents in normal leisure activities such as dancing, recreation, camping, etc.
  • Engage in recreational and/or therapeutic sports activities with clients as needed
  • Be able to organize and participate in various activities such as games, sports and exercise
  • Be available for and be able to integrate training as provided on a regular basis
  • Able to drive for prolonged periods, stretch, reach, push, pull, bend, carry, lift, run, and walk
  • Transport clients to required appointments, community events, or other needed destinations.
  • Ensure cleanliness of client bedrooms and cottage common areas at all times
  • Attend appointments, religious services, gender affirming events, or any client related activities on campus or in the community with clients while providing care and supervision.
  • Be available to work in other departments/cottages as a child care counselor when called upon
  • Document client related behaviors in accordance with program and contract required procedures.
  • Other duties as required

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bilingual in Spanish Strongly Preferred
  • High School Diploma required
  • AA (60 units) or Bachelor's Degree preferred 
  • Interest in working with children
  • Feel comfortable with children and be responsive to them
  • Valid California drivers license, driving record and personal vehicle insurance acceptable to Hillsides' insurance carrier preferred.
  • Be able to show proof of immunization or immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases transmitted by the respiratory route, including Varicella, MMR, Tdap, & Influenza. Reasonable accommodations to vaccination requirements available to employees who, because of a sincerely held religious belief, a medical contraindication, or a disability, do not receive some or all of the required vaccinations.
